We began twenty-five years ago as Las Tejedoras de Santa Fe y Los Alamos -- weavers and spinners living in the northern New Mexico communities of Santa Fe and Los Alamos. Today we have members throughout northern New Mexico and southern Colorado and our members knit, bead, make quilts and fabric collages, as well as weave, spin, dye, and enjoy fiber art. Thus we call ourselves Las Tejedoras Fiber Arts Guild.

We usually meet in the morning on the first Tuesday of each month from September through May in Santa Fe. We have started scheduling some Saturday meetings so check out the
schedule on the calendar page. Everyone is welcome at our meetings. Our guild offers educational programs, field trips, and workshops. We sponsor a guild fiber art show at Ghost Ranch in Abiquiui, New Mexico, each summer. These shows provide an excellent opportunity for our members to exhibit and sell their work. Our membership is open to anyone who loves textiles.

Next Meeting: Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Diane de Souza: "From Old World Weaving to New World Fibers"

At the Unitarian Church in Santa Fe

9:30 am: Social Time
10:00 am: Business Meeting
10:30 am: Diane de Souza: "From Old World Weaving to New World Fibers"

Diane de Souza has a broad background in fiber and weave structures having worked with most fibers and weave structures ranging from weft face rug weaving to 24 shaft loom controlled work. She has been actively weaving for 10 years and knitting, crocheting, ... for many more. She has done production weaving for Tierra Wools and Weaving Southwest. She has taught in multiple venues and enjoys passing on her experiences to others. Her work has won awards or been accepted for juried shows at IWC, Convergence, the Boulder Guild, Pagosa Fiber Festival, and the Taos Arts Festival. Her current focus is interesting fibers, dyeing with natural dye extracts, loom controlled shibori, and complex loom controlled weave structures.

The program will be a combination of a brief textile tour of southern Laos and a discussion of the current state of manufactured fibers. There is a connection but you will have to come to the event for that information. Diane spent 2 weeks in southern Laos in February 2007. Project equipment permitting, there will be a brief photo show and textiles and textile equipment will be available for a close-up inspection. The majority of the textiles are weft faced Ikat although there are some surprises in the mix. Diane gave a program a year and a half ago about manufactures fibers - soy, bamboo, sea silk, ... there will be brief update on those fibers as well as the connection to Laos.
