Brief History of Las Tejedoras Fiber Arts GuildThe Guild was founded in the Spring of 1972 under the leadership of Noel Stewart as Las Tejedoras de Santa Fe y Los Alamos. Noel was the first president and served Fall 1972-May 1973. The Guild assisted with the Rio Grande Weaving and Dyeing Workshop in 1976 and 1979 at the Museum of International Folk Art. This led to the publication of Spanish Textile Tradition of New Mexico and Colorado, copyright 1979 Museum of New Mexico Press. The newsletters in the Guild archives go back to 1979. At that time the membership was roughly divided between Santa Fe and Los Alamos addresses. Meetings were held alternately between Santa Fe and Los Alamos. We've been adding members from towns outside these two since. The number of members from Taos picked up in '85 and has increased steadily. We started getting more than one or two members from Espãnola, Abiquiu, and Ojo Caliente in the late 80's. In 2005 members live in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Espãnola, Taos, Albuquerque, Las Vegas and smaller towns throughout northcentral New Mexico. The
guild changed its name to Las Tejedoras Fiber Arts Guild
in 1999. With this change we were recognizing that our
members live throughout northcentral New Mexico and
southern Colorado. We also wished to expand our
membership to include knitters and spinners as well as
weavers who were our traditional membership base. Las Tejedoras dues are $20 and cover membership from June 1 to May 31 each year.Print out the membership form found here and mail along with your dues.
